FORCE FOR THE CTTY OF CANTUN, ILLINOIS . )

ILLINOIS :
Section l. This Ordinance may be referred to as the
"Volunteer Fireman Ordinance".
Section 2. A Volunteer Fireman Force for this City is hereby
created and established. The members thereof shall consist of fifteen
Volunteer Fireman, each of whom shall be appointed by the Mayor with
the advice, consent and approval of not less than two-thirds of the
City Council. Such appointments shall be first made as soon as
practicable following the adoption of this Ordinance and on the
first �esday of each May hereafter, and at such intervals hereafter
as may be necessary to fill any vacancy and so as to keep the compli-
ment of the Volunteer Fireman Force at its maximum of fifteen members
at all times or as near thereto as may be. Insofar as practicable
the appointments herein contemplated shall be made after referral
and consultation with the Fire Chief of this City.
Section 3. Volunteer rireman shall meet the following
minimum requirements : Each of them shall be adult male citizens
meeting the residency requirements established for regular members
of the Fire Department of this City, shall not be members of the
regular Fire Department , shall be of good morals and character, and
shall not have ever been co nvicted of a felony or any crime involving
moral turpitude.
Section 4. I'rior to entering upon any of their duties, each
Volunteer Fireman shall receive a course of training in the use of
equipment and such fire-fighting procedures as shall be appropriate
- for the performance of their duties as contemplated by this Ordinance
and as shall be determined and provided by the corporate authorities
of this City from time to time.
Section 5. A candidate for appointment to the Volunteer
Fireman Force of this City, as a condition to appointment , shall be
fingerprinted and shall provide such other personal data as may be
requested of him by the �'ire Chief of this City, such prints and
data to be maintained by said Fire Chief. Each Volunteer Fireman,
at the expense of the City will be provided with a suitable identifi-
cation card which, among other personal data, shall contain and
display a suitable picture of the applicable Volunteer Fireman.
Section 6 . Volunteer Fireman shall be provided with
appropriate fire-fighting gear and equipment as determined by and
at the expense of this City. Such gear or equipment as is worn may .
be similar or identical to that worn by the members of the regular
Fire Department of this City excepting, however, helments worn by
Volunteer Fireman shall be sharply and conspicuously distinctive
from those worn by members of the regular Fire Department of this
City. Such gear and equipment shall remain the property of the City
of Canton, Illinois and shall be returned to the Fire Chief a� this
City upon termination of the services of any Volunteer I'ireman. Such
gear and equipment shall be maintained in the condition and at the
place or places as may from time to time be determined by the Fire
Chief of this City. Appropriate records delineatin� the disposition
of all gear and equipment shall be kept current by the Fire Chief
of this City .
Section ?. Volunteer Fireman shall at all times durin� the
performance of their duties be subject to the following discipline :
They shall be subject to the direction and control of the Fire Chief
o� this City.
Section 8. Volunteer I'ireman shall be assigned to perform
the following duties of this City and none other, to-wit : Volunteer

Fireman shall assist the regular Fire Department of this City in
the performance of their duties when called upon. Volunteer
Fireman may be called to perform such duties by any one of the
following :
a. The Fire Chief of this City ;
b. Any Assistant Fire Chief of this City ;
c. Any Senior Fireman of this City.
Volunteer Fireman, insofar as practicable, shall be
called to duty sequentially. That is, in such manner that each
Volunteer Fireman shall be called in rotation and so that the
services of each one is equivalent to that of each other.
Section 9. Volunteer Fireman shall receive training not
less than two separate days in each calendar month. The course
of training shall be as from time to time prescribed by the Fire
Chief of this City. Any Volunteer Fireman who misses more than
two such training days in any six month period shall� upon recommen-
dation of the Fire Chief� made in writing to the Chairman of the
Fire Station Committee of this City, be removed from his position
as Volunteer Fireman.
Section 10. Each Volunteer Fireman shall receive the
f ollowing pay for services rendered to this City as such.
a. For each regular training period (or, day) attended�
the sum of �3.00 (but not to exceed �6.00 per month) .
b. For each f ire call attended, the sum of �3.00.
c. For each standby call (involving a continuous
period of 24 hours) the sum of �15.00.
The Fire Chief shall be personally responsible for
certifying pay entitlements of Volunteer Firemen on a monthly
basis to the appropriate officials of this City, the same to be in
his monthly report. Payment for services rendered shall be made
to each Volunteer Fireman as soon after the first Council meeting
of each month as may be practicable.
Section 11. No Volunteer Fireman shall be appointed or
enter upon his duties as such unless and until insurance coverage
(as contemplated by the Cities and Villages Act of the State of
Illinois and as set forth under Division 5 of the Municipal Code
of 1961) has been procured and declared fully operative and effective
in writing by an insurance carrier pursuant to a policy carried by
a nd with this City.
Section 12. This Ordinance shall be in full force and
effect upon its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton�
Illinois and approval by the Mayor thereof.
