HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution #3664RESOLUTION NO. 3664 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMON COMMUNITY GOALS FOR CANTON REGARDING HIGHWAY 336 WHEREAS, the City of Canton supports the Illinois Department of Transportation's efforts to conduct a corridor study of a four-lane highway connecting Peoria to Macomb, known as Illinois 336; and, WHEREAS, the construction of such a highway would have a direct affect on the City of Canton and its residents; and, WHEREAS, the City of Canton recognizes that transportation is a critical issue to the community's future; and, WHEREAS, the City of Canton believes that working with community partners in achieving transportation goals provides the greatest opportunity to reach those goals; and, WHEREAS, the City of Canton has facilitated discussions with numerous community partners to develop a common, collective and comprehensive statement of community goals and objectives desired of afour-lane highway; and, WHEREAS, the City of Canton has determined that it is in the best interest of its residents to publicly support these common community goals for Canton regarding highway 336; and, WHEREAS, the following statements reflect a comprehensive set of transportation goals, common throughout the community, with regard to Illinois 336; and, WHEREAS, these goals apply without specific regard to a corridor; however, reflect tangible objectives that the community hopes to accomplish with the highway's ultimate placement; then, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CANTON, Fulton County, Illinois as follows: The City of Canton adopts and supports the following statements regarding the Illinois Department of Transportation's study of Illinois 336: 1. The development of a four-lane highway connecting Peoria to Macomb and providing transportation to the residents of Fulton County will be of tremendous benefit to the City of Canton. 2. The community supports an expressway design as a cost reduction alternative to a freeway design if IDOT determines such a design is necessary. 3. The community supports a highway placement that comes as close to Canton as possible. (no further than 3 miles) 4. The community supports the Canton Park District's desire to have the highway come as close as possible to the Canton Airport. 5. The community supports the Canton Park District's position that it has no non-negotiable "buffer" issues regarding Lakeland Park and desires to have the highway come as close as possible to Lakeland Park. 6. The community supports Spoon River College's desire to have the highway come as close as possible to its Canton campus. 7. The community supports the route that provides quick and efficient access to the Peoria Regional Airport. 8. The community supports the route that will provide the greatest opportunity for economic development by utilizing existing industrial infrastructure located on the west side of the community. 9. The community supports the route that will provide non-interruptible, 65-mph travel to and from Peoria. 10. The community supports the development of a comprehensive transportation design that is conducive to local commuting between Lewistown, Canton and Farmington, which represents two-thirds of Fulton County's residents. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois. With the passage of this Resolution copies shall be forwarded to the appropriate official parties and entities.
