Mechanical Committee Minutes
City Council Chambers
July 25, 2000 - 6:30 p.m.

Public Safety & Traffic Committee

Chief Elam distributed the written monthly police report and commented on the 1~` K-9
report on the department's second dog. He also advised the committee of problems with
a burned out house on Johnson Court that required notifying the Health Department.
Chief Elam reported on a new program that is going over well. The officers are stopping
in to talk to the business people in their patrol areas to see if they have any problems or
concerns. Information will be brought back to the committee.
Chief Elam informed the committee that there is a problem with trash in the "150 year
parking lot". He is working with the city attorney on this problem. He also stated that in
one night six curfew arrests were made at the lot.
Dan Oaks, representing Chief Stanko, distributed the monthly fire department report. He
added that August 1~` at 7:30 p.m. there will be a night drill with a briefing at the fire
department, then on to the location of the drill. Aldermen are welcome.
No other business was discussed. The Public Safety and Traffic Committee adjourned.
Streets & Garbage Committee

There was no business to be discussed under Streets and Garbage, and the committee
adjourned.
Lake, Buildings & Grounds Committee

Linda Caudle spoke briefly on the Historic Depot Policy and Contract for Use that was
drafted by the Heritage Committee. City Attorney Jim Elson has reviewed the policy.
Linda asked the aldermen to take time to review the recommended policies and offer any
comments or changes at the next Lake Buildings and Grounds Committee Meeting. The
item was held over until next month. Linda also reported that plans for the re-dedication
ceremony of the Historic Depot will be September 20~` and plans by the Heritage
Committee are going well. She was pleased that Leander Construction, Inc. had agreed
to sponsor the dedica~on reception. As a footnote she addedat the original dedication
was held on September 20, 1914.
Clif O'Brien presented quotes on cloth vertical blinds for the depot. He recommended
purchasing locally with the best price from Drapery Designs by Martha Huff. The quote
of $1490 includes professional installation. Motion was made by Alderman Phillips,
seconded by Alderman Shores to accept the low local quote for depot draperies from
Drapery Designs by Martha Huff for $1490. Voice vote, motion carried.
No additional business was discussed and the committee adjourned.
Public Works, Water & Sewer Committee

Greg Pollitt, representing Steve White, requested permission to replace the drive motor
on the accelator at the water plan, which burned when the gearbox locked up. The motor
can be ordered through Manufacturing Services in Canton for $1085 plus shipping and
installation. The expense would come out of the operating budget. Motion was made by
Alderman Phillips, seconded by Alderman Hartford to approve the purchase of a new
motor for the accelator from Manufacturing Services for $1085 plus shopping and
installation. Voice vote, motion carried.
Greg Pollitt discussed the non point source pollution control program application that
Tim Sumner of Crawford Murphy and Tilly is preparing for the City. This is a 319 grant
application for Lakeshore restoration around the lake. Total project cost is estimated at
$200,000. The City's share will be 40% ($80,000). Council has already approved
spending $70,000 on the project. The time delay is responsible for the estimated increase
in cost. Both of the sites targeted are on City owned property. Deadline for the
application is August 1~`. Motion was made by Alderman Hartford, seconded by
Alderman Phillips to approve the application and have it delivered Wednesday morning
to Crawford, Murphy and Tilly. Roll call vote was taken of all aldermen present: Ayes:
May, Shores, Nidiffer, Phillips, Hartford, Molleck. Nays: None. Motion unanimous.
No other business was discussed and the committee adjourned.
