RESOLUTION N0. 7 ~ ~
A RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH THE NUMBER "911" AS THE PRIMARY EMERGENCY TELEPHONE
NUMBER FOR USE IN THE CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS.
WHEREAS, Chapter 24, Sections 31 et seq. of the Illinois Revised
Statutes provide for the designation of an emergency telephone number
for use throughout the State of Illiroi_s; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois finds and
declares that it is in the public interest to shorten the time required
for a citizen to request and receive emergency aid; and
WHEREAS, there currently exists thousands of different emergency phone
numbers throughout the State of Illinois, and present telephone exchange
boundaries and central office service areas do not necessarily correspond
to public safety and political boundaries; and
WHEREAS, provision of a single, primary three-digit emergency number
through which emergency services can be quickly and efficiently obtained would
provide a significant contribution to law enforcement and other public service
efforts by making it less difficult to quickly notify public safety personnel; and
WHEREAS, such a simplified means of procuring emergency services will
result in the saving of life, a reduction in the destruction of property, quicker
apprehension of criminals, and ultimately the saving of money; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois further finds
and declares that the establishment of a uniform emergency number is a matter
of concern and interest to all inhabitants and citizens of the City of Canton; and
WHEREAS, it is the purpose of this Resolution to establish the number
"911" as the primary emergency telephone number for use in the City of Canton
and to develop and improve emergency communication procedures and facilities
in such a manner as to be able to quickly respond to any person calling the
telephone number "911" seeking police, fire, medical, rescue, and other
emergency services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CANTON, ILLINOIS, AS FOLLOWS:
1. It is hereby determined that it is necessary, desirable and to the
best interests of the City of Canton to establish the number "911" as the
primary emergency telephone number for use in the City of Canton.
2. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon its
passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois and approval
by the Mayor thereof.
