HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-04-12 Strategic Planning Session Agenda1 City of Canton Strategic Planning Work Day Graham Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room 210 West Walnut Street Saturday, February 4, 2012 Goal: The Work Day is designed to build and confirm a consensus among members of the Canton City Council regarding strategic priorities for the City over the next few years. Agenda 9:00 a.m. - Welcome & Overview of Agenda – Jim Review of Departmental Capital Request – Jim Review of Downtown/5th Avenue TIF Projects – Jim & Keith Distribution of index cards for anonymous questions of what our priorities, visions and plans are for the next 1, 2 and 5 years. Prioritize list by the following criteria: Identify mandated accomplishments vs. wants Identify how we are going to pay for it Make sure citizens’ will is a very high priority Be flexible – change will occur Consider benefits and impacts Consider current projects underway or on the books Decide what is important, i.e. culture, environment, traffic Recognize impacts to other agencies 10:15 a.m. - Break 10:30 a.m. - Review W&S Bond Related Projects – Keith, Bill, Joe & Greg Review of MFT Plan – Keith & Bill 11:15 a.m. - Lake Development and Operations Noon - Lunch 12:30 p.m. - Summary of morning’s discussions – Jim 1:00 p.m. - Review of Canton’s housing needs by realtors Ed Ketcham and Doug Hensley. 2:00 p.m. - Summarize a group list of priorities of the next year, two years and five years 3:30 p.m. - Adjournment Executive Session for personnel and possible land acquisition 2 2011 Strategic Planning: List of vision and plans for the next 1 & 2 and 5 years Fire Suppression/Second Story Development Program – to provide TIF incentives and update ordinances to encourage building owners in the downtown business district to install fire suppression systems, bring electrical/plumbing systems to code and to develop second story space into taxable residential units. Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce – to establish a highly visible public facility to serve as visitor center and office for the Chamber of Commerce/SRPED. Possible locations include the Historic Train Depot or the first floor of 61 East Side Square. Community Theater – to develop a community theater for live performances, musical recitals, comedy club and other similar uses. Possible locations include the second floor of 61 East Side Square, Odd Fellows building or new facility on former IH site. Downtown Civic Center – Develop indoor facility for commercial events, shows and large community gatherings. Possible locations include second floor of Odd Fellows building or new facility constructed on former IH site. Downtown Banquet Hall – develop downtown facility capable of supporting weddings, reunions, meetings and similar events. Possible locations include second or third floor of Odd Fellows building, second floor of 61 East Side Square, or new facility at the former IH site. IH Tractor Museum – to establish unique tourist attraction in cooperation with Canton Park District and/or Parlin Library. Possible locations include abandoned overall factory or new facility constructed on the former IH site. Budget additional monies for residential and/or commercial demolitions and urban renewal. Improve public access to recreational activities surrounding Canton Lake. Consider purchase of privately owned property at Main and Pine Streets in order to improve existing wall and add public parking. Urban renewal on West Locust Large “Welcome to Canton” signs at the entrances to the City. 3 Create a welcome to Canton video for our website using local residents speaking to the great quality of life here. Foster more intergovernmental cooperation for services. Increase the scope of our 50/50 sidewalk plan.
