HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance #1304 ORDINANCE N0. 1304 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 1, CHAPTER 4 OF THE CANTON MIINICIPAL CODE RELATING TO ELECTION PROCEDURES WHEREAS, electors of the City of Canton on November 6, 1990, pursuant to provisions of Article VII, subsection 11 of the Constitution of the State of Illinois, passed a referendum providing for the election of City officers on a non-partisan basis without political party designation; and, WHEREAS, the Canton City Council has determined that it is necessary and in the best interest of the City of Canton to amend Title 1, Chapter 4 of the Canton Municipal Code relating to election procedures as hereinafter set forth. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CANTON, Fulton County, Illinois as follows: 1. That the Canton City Council hereby finds the foregoing recitals to be fact. 2. That Title 1, Chapter 4 of the Canton Municipal Code is hereby amended by adding thereto the following Section 10 to read as follows: "1-L,.-10: ELECTION PROCEDURES. The City of Canton hereby adopts a non-partisan manner of electing municipal officers with respect to all municipal elections held subsequent to April 2, 1991, subject to the following: (1) All elections in the City of Canton for City officers shall be conducted on a non-partisan basis without political party designation. (2) Times for elections. Elections for city officials o ~ _. . shall be held at the times fixed by law for holding the same. (3) Party designations prohibited. No party name, party initial, party circle, platform, principle, appellation or distinguishing mark of any kind shall be printed upon any nominating papers or election ballot used with respect to any election held under the provisions of this section." 3. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois and approval by the Mayor thereof. PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois at a regular meeting this 5th day of March, 1991 upon a roll call vote as follows: AYES: Aldermen Steck, Sar~,f, Meade, Bohler, Chapman..
