HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution #3098RE90LUTIaV ND. 3098 W1-EREAS, a Federal Commission established by U.S. Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole recommended that Congress adopt legislation to ensure the continued provision of health benefits to retired coal miners who receive such benefits from the UMNA Health and Retirement Funds; and, WHEREAS, such legislation, introduced by Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia (S. 1989) and Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania (H.R. 4013), would require all companies to pay a fair share of the cost of providing health benefits to their former employees and place and equitable fee on the entire coal industry to pay for the cost of "orphan" retirees who have no company to pay for such benefits; and, WHEREAS, approximately citizens receive their health care from the UMNA Funds; and, VVI-EREAS, the UVWA Funds currently are experiencing serious financial difficulties; and, WHEREAS, the Rockefeller/Murtha legislation has been endorsed by both labor and management in the coal industry. NGN, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois as follows: 1. That the Canton City Council hereby finds the foregoing recitals to be fact. 2. That the City Council of the City of Canton strongly supports S. 1989 and H.R. 4013 urges the Congress of the United States to enact them into law; and, 3. That a copy of this resolution be sent to the members of the Illinois congressional delegation, the Governor and all county commissions in the state with a recommendation that they adopt similar resolutions of support for S. 1989 and H.R. 4013. PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois upon a roll call vote as follows: AYES• Aldern~az May, Barnett, Meade, Bohlen, Steck, Sarff, Coay. NAYS: None.
