HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution #170 RESOLUTION NO. /70 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE ^ITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS: WHEREAS; A healthy economy in the foundation of a decent standard of living for American citizens, Unfortunately millions of American wage earners in many areas of the land still work for wages below that sufficient for maintenance of minimal needs for themselves and their families. This deplorable condition not only affects the workers involved and communities they live in, but spreads like a disease to the entire economic body of the country. The low consumer purchasing power of large numbers of American workers inevitably reduces the economic well-being of retail mer- chants, manufacturers, etc. In the five (5) years since the establishment of the present seventy- five (75¢) cents per hour minimum, which has been inadequate, the cost of living has risen drastically. At the same time production output per man hours has reached a record high. Simple justice and plain economic good sence therefore require an adjustment of the minimum wage to a level which would en- able all Americans to attain and maintain adequate living standards and con- ditions. For this purpose a minimum wage of $1.25 per hour is absolutely essential. THEREFME BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois, calls upon the Congress of the United States to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to provide for a minimum wage of $1.25 per hour. That a copy of this resolution be sent to the United States Senators, from the state of Illinois, and to the members of the House of Representatives from all the Congressional district in which we live. That our fellow citizens in the community, including business men, con- sumers, workers, housewives, etc., be made aware of the urgent need for such action by our elected Representatives in order to protect the living standards of all Segments of the community. sed by the City Council and approved by the Mayor this 4 day of A.
