HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution #188 RESOLUTION No. 188 WHEREAS, the CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS is an important part of what is known as thPeoria-Central Illinois trading area; and WHEREAS, the residents of this area are keenly interested in having the very best in television through the medium of very high frequency television which has standard acceptance over the United States and is found in the 75 major markets of the country and enjoyed by more than 90% of the people having television today, and the same type of television found in the allocation of Channel 8 (VHF) to Peoria, Illinois, which is the only VHF service allocated for Peoria and its trading area; and WHEREAS, the superiority of the coverage of Channel 8, very high frequency television over ultra high frequencycover television terrain, of d e ability VHF to have a much wider coverage, to acceptance that it has over the United States makes it a superior television service through being able to obtain better programs and more support; and WHEREAS. Channel 8 is the only Grade A service for our community; and WHEREAS, there is a great public need for this VHF public service, Channel 8, in this area; and WHEREAS, it would be an irreparable loss and great discrimination if this channel was moved from Peoria to Rock Island as now proposed areaby ceom having rtain private selfish interests who are seeking to keep the people of this first class television; and WHEREAS, a construction permit has been awarded to WIRL Television Co. of Peoria for Channel 8 after a four year legal battle thereon; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS, does hereby protest any attempt to move Channel 8 out of Peoria and the Central Illincts trading area; thatdit is in the public interest, convenience and necessity of all people in this area to see that Channel 8 is not moved out of this area; that there is a great need for it and the people have been waiting here a long time for it, and its loss would be irreparable to the general welfare of all citisens of this area, and any attempt to remove it is a discrimination against the best interests of this community, and it is earnestly requested that the Federal Communications Commission permit WIRL Television Co. to build under its construction permit on said Channel 8 immediately to serve the people of this area; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Honorable Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States, White House, Washington. D.C. ; Honorable George C. McConnaughey, Chairman, Federal Communications Commission, Washington, D. C. and to each member of the Federal Communications Commission, Washington. D. C. who are: Mr. Rosel H. Hyde, Mr. Robert T. Bartley, Jr., Mr. Robert E. Lee, Mr. John C. Doerfer, Mr. Richard A. Mack and Mr. T. A. M. Craven; to Senator Paul H. Douglas, Senate Office Building, Washington, D. C., Senator Everett M. Dirksen, Senate Office Building. Washington, D. C. . Congressman Harold H. Velde, House Office Building, Washington, D. C. , Senator Warren G. Magnusson, Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, Washington, D. C. , and Senator Thomas A. Wofford.
