A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING LAND FOR THE HOWARD E. STRUBE,JR. FIREFIGHTER
MEMORIAL AND DESIGNATING THE BUILDING LOCATED AT 101 EAST SPRUCE
STREET AS THE
HOWARD E.STRUBE,JR.CENTRAL FIRE STATION
WHEREAS, Firefighter Howard E. Strube, Jr. was a firefighter for the Canton Fire Department
and was killed in the line of duty on September 7, 1997; and
WHEREAS, a private committee, designated as the Howard E. Strube, Jr. Firefighter Memorial
Committee ( Committee"), was established with the intent to design a memorial in Firefighter Strube's
name and to raise private funds to finance the memorial; and
WHEREAS,the Committee is seeking to construct the memorial at the site of the fire station on
ground on the west side of the building,just south of the engine bays(See attached Exhibit A); and
WHEREAS, the current fire station, located at 101 East Spruce Street, is designated as the
"David W. O'Brien Public Safety Building" and when named in honor of fallen Police Officer David
O'Brien, housed both the police and fire departments; and
WHEREAS,the Canton Police Department moved from that building located at 101 East Spruce
Street in January, 2001,and is now housed in City Hall located at 2 North Main Street; and
WHEREAS,since the building located at 101 East Spruce Street only houses the fire department,
the Committee is seeking to rename the fire station the "Howard E. Strube, Jr. Central Fire Station" in
honor of the fallen fire fighter.
WHEREAS, the Lake, Buildings, and Grounds Committee of the City of Canton has determined
that it is necessary and in the best interests of the City of Canton to designate the property on the west
side of the building located at 101 East Spruce Street for the Howard E. Strube, Jr. Firefighter Memorial
(as described and laid out in attached Exhibit A)and to rename the building as the"Howard E. Strube, Jr.
Central Fire Station"; and
WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Canton has made a similar determination.

NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS,AS FOLLOWS:
I. The City of Canton hereby designates the ground shown in Exhibit A for the exclusive use
for the Howard E. Strube,Jr. memorial.
2. The City of Canton hereby designates its building located at 101 East Spruce Street as the
Howard E. Strube,Jr. Central Fire Station.
3. The City of Canton has not pledged any funds towards the construction the memorial.
4. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage by the City
Council of the City of Canton, Illinois and approval by the Mayor thereof.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois at a regular meeting this 7TH Day of March,
2017 upon a roll call vote as follows:
