A RESOLUTION APPROVING A LETTER OF ENGAGEMENT WITH BEAL LAW
OFFICE, LTD. AND THE CITY OF CANTON AND DIRECTING THE MAYOR TO
EXECUTE AND DELIVER SAID LETTER ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF CANTON,
ILLINOIS.
WHEREAS, the Legal & Ordinance Committee of the City of Canton has determined
that it is necessary and in the best interests of the City of Canton to enter into a Letter of
Engagement with Beal Law Office, Ltd. as set forth in Exhibit "A" attached hereto and
incorporated herein for legal services in connection with employment and retirements issues
concerning Lt. W.D. Taylor and the City of Canton; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton has made a similar determination.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS, AS FOLLOWS:
1. That the Letter of Engagement attached hereto and incorporated herein as Exhibit "A" is
hereby approved by the Canton City Council.
2. That the Mayor of the City of Canton, Illinois, or his designee, is hereby authorized and
directed to execute said Letter of Engagement on behalf of the City of Canton.
3. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage by the
City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois and approval by the Mayor thereof.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois at a regular meeting this 2nd day of
February, 2016 upon a roll call vote as follows:

RE: Taylor v. City of Canton
Dear Mayor Fritz:
We are pleased that you have considered us to represent you in the Complaint
filed in Fulton County Circuit Court by former police officer Dan Taylor complaining of
his pension payment determination. We would be happy to represent the City in this
case and any any other matter related to Officer Taylor's retirement, pay, and/or
proposed pay, either as their independent labor counsel, or with your insurance
company as insurance counsel. For the City of Canton representation we would
charge at the rate of$185.00 per hour for all time spent on the case. Our firm would bill
in minimum increments of one-quarter of an hour. We would also charge you for
expenses that we incur from time to time during our representation of the City in this
case. Such expenses would include but not be limited to deposition costs, filing fees,
travel expenses, copying fees, and any expert witness fees. Where possible, and
without affecting the quality of the work that we perform for the City of Canton, I would
utilize my Associate for research on questions that come up from time to time during our
defense in this matter. His rate is $140.00 per hour.
If you are in agreement with the terms and conditions that are contained herein
through this engagement letter, please return a signed copy to my office. Again, I
appreciate the opportunity to be of service to the City of Canton.

ACCEPTANCE
I, Mayor Jeffrey Fritz, after first having been approved by the Canton City
Council, accept the terms and conditions of this engagement letter for the defense of
the lawsuit filed by Dan Taylor against the City of Canton.
