HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-08-1972 Council Meeting Minutes a373 r'eb. 8, 1972 Canton City Council held a special meeting on Feb. 8, 1972 in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Jennings called the meeting to order at 6:32 P.M. Present for roll call: Aldermen Rupe, Howard, Farr, Wilcoxen, Hurst, Smith, Edwards, Peatc, Cook, Spencer, Yerbic, Fulton, and Kovachevich. Abseritt Alderman Berry. Pledge of Allegiance was followed by Invocation by Alderman Edwards. Mayor Jennings instructed the City Clerk to read the purpose of the Special Council meeting: 'PTO DISCUSS `T E PROPOSED FULTON COUNTY LANDFILL". Mr. Charles Sandberg, Fulton County Highway Engineer, spoke to the Council regarding the proposed landfill and the feasibility of obtaining same. He said there were nineteen communities in the County and most of them were ready to to participate in the project. Mayor Jennings stated that the City of Carton garbage would be weighed on the City scales and re- P oorted to the operator at t'-le Landfill.. It was esti- mated that approximately 6) toils of garbage would be hauled to the landfill each week. Discussion about the tax rate; if a contract could be made on a one-year basis and what if some of the cities backed out after one year; too great a distance for individuals traveling to the landfill for the amount of money t;7 supposed to be saved; Mr. Sandberg stated it would be discouraged that private citizens use the landfill -- a box may be placed near the entrance or some such arrangement made. Discussion about the need for another garbage truck in the city because of the long run to the proposed landfill. Ma; or Jennings stated that the City had until 11arch 1, 1972 to provide a landfill laid out by an engineer. Alderman Fulton excused at 7:09 P. 1-1. to use telephone, returning, 7:12 P.M. City Attorney, Wi..liam 1,laimgren, made inquiry as to length of time the pro- posed landfill could exist anu was toga by Mr. Sandberg that it can operate for twenty years. Inquiry about disposal of junk cars. Tyr. Sandberg mentioned that recycling miFfht be considered. Alderman Hurst sa_i_d that a stud:* of our local land fill showed that forte picku-n trucks entered that area dur;._n-: a one-day check. Alderman Rune asked if the -'1.5O per ton rate applied to everyone, and, if at the end of the year, the rates should be increased would each city have a break-down of loads, costs, etc. ( 1.50 per ton applies to everyone) . Upon questioning, it was re-)ortod that ').nox County did have a land fill on county basis. Alderman _` ,pich moves that t _e City Council instruct the representative of the landfill committee, Alderman Kovachevich, to notify the county landfill committee that our City would participate in this program for the next year. l lotion seconded by Alderman Hurst.
