HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-20-1968 Council Meeting Minutes 84 Aug. 202 1968 Canton City Council held a regular meeting on Aug. 20, 1968 in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Woods called the meeting to order at 5:30 P. M• Present for Roll Call: Aldermen Rusnak, Howard, Svob, Jacobs, Sepich, Long, Kroell, spencer, Yerbic, Danner, and George. Absent: Aldermen Farr, Skinner, and Ellis. Pledge of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Alderman Danner. Motion by Alderman Kroell, seconded by Alderman Yerbic to dispense with reading minutes from previous meeting, accept same and place on file. Voice vote. Carried. Standing committee reports. T. P. & W. RR crossing on First Avenue can be repaired for an estimated $440.00 (city's portion of the work) and Alderman Spencer moved to repair that crossing with blacktop material. Alderman Kroell seconds the motion. y Alder- man Howard if there will be much further expense for crossing repairs. One more crossingave some expense. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen George, Danner, Yerbic, Spencer, Kroell, Long, Sepich, Jacobs, Svob, Howard, and Rusnak. HAY: None. Lease for use by Civil Defense of the Dr. F4. K. Hauber building. Alderman Danner inquired from City Attora�ydiMcMunn answer todterminateethedleaset. the proposal of the Council regarding the kndwer to the letter has not been received. Jay Cee Beach will official dose as of August 253 but, weather permitting, may be open for the Labor Day Holiday, announced by Alderman Jacobs. Mr. Tony Carrara reported complaints from noise from the Star Delivery Trucks on Baxter and Dean Courts - from about 10:00 P. M. until 7:00 A. M. Alderman Danner reported this noise had been very annoying for some time and he under- stood the company had purchased ner�moves south that the CityhAttorneyo contact the trucking business. Alderman Dan Star Delivery or their attorney to see what can be done to stop this noise, and, if necessary, to take legal action. Alderman George seconds this motion. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Rusnak, Howard, Svob, Jacobs, Sepich, Long, Spencer, Yerbic, Danner, and George. NAY: Alderman Kroell. (10 AYES and 1 NAY) . Carried. Alderman Jacobs moves, Alderman Spencer seconds motion that all bids on the boat and trailer be rejected and that the City Clerk be authorized to readver- tise for bids on the boat and trailer, excluding the siren and light. Carried by voice vote. Special committee reports. Communications to Council. Thank you note - H. A. Nelson family for flowers at time of his death. To be filed. Old business. New business, Dog Ordinance up for first reading. Alderman Howard moves, Alderman Yerbic seconds motion that the Ordinance be read by Title only. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Rusnak, Howard, Svob, Jacobs, Kroell, Spencer, and Yerbic. NAY: Alder- : men Sepich, Long, Danner, and George. (Seten AYES and Four NAYS). Carried. Title read. Same to lay over until next meeting. Fair Housing Ordinance ready for first reading. Alderman Howard moves, Alder- man Kroell seconds motion to read the Ordinance by Title only. Roll call vote, AYE: Aldermen Yerbic, Spencer, Kroell, Jacobs, Svob, Howard, and Rusnak. NAY: Aldermen George, Danner, Long, and Sepich. (7 AYES And 4 NAYS). Carried. Title read. Ordinance to lay over until next meeting. Mayor Woods reported that he had written to the Governor, Congressmen, Representa- tives, and Division of Highways regarding use of city's .share of Motor Fuel Tax money -- recommendations were that the City should proceed with projects. 85 Aug. 20, 1968, Cont. (2) Letter from Mr. Robert Welch regarding the money to be received in lieu of taxes from the hi-rise and low-income properties in Canton, read by Mayor Woods. Alderman George moves, Alderman Sepich seconds motion that each Alder- man receive a copy of this letter. Contract for traffic engineering with the Crawford, Bunte, and Roden Engineer- ing Firm. Alderman Yerbic moves, Alderman Danner seconds motion that the Mayor and City Clerk enter into an agreement with this firm. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Rusnak, Sepich, Long, Spencer, Yerbic, Danner. NAY: Aldermen Howard, Svob, Jacobs, Kroell, and George. (6 AYES �and 5 NAYS). Motion lost. Mayor Woods recommended the following appointmenta; Mr. Tom Wood to replace "Chuck" Maroon on the Citizens Advisory Committee and Herman Wheeler and Richard Kennedy on the Human Relations Committee. Alderman Kroell moves, Alderman Sepich seconds motion that the appointments be confirmed. Carried, voice vote. Bond with the TransAmerica Insurance Co. in the amount of $12000.00, properly approved by the Finance Committee for John L. Fisher, Fire and Police Commission. Alderman Sepich moves, Alderman Svob seconds motion to accept same and place on file. Carried, voice vote. Inquiry by Alderman George on the white rock on Fifteenth Avenue, if the School Board had been contacted about partial payment of same. No action had been taken. U Meeting of the Lake Development Committee immediately following the Council meeting announced by Alderman Jacobs. Motion by Alderman Jacobs, seconded by Alderman Yerbic to adjourn.
