HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-02-1963 Council Meeting Minutes 192 July 2, 1963 Canton City Council held a regular meeting on July 2, 1963, in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Cook called the meeting to order at 7:07 P. M. Present for roll call: Aldermen Sebree, Howard, Wright, Duncan, Hurst, Whitehead, Skinner, Long, Abbott, Gibbons, Horton, Jennings, Bender, and George. Absent: None. Pledge -of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Alderman Howard. Alderman Howard moves and Alderman Horton seconds a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as presented and place same on file. Roll wall vote. AYE: Unanimous. Recommendations were made not to allow the Donald Smith Claim. Alderman Howard moves and Alderman Bender seconds a motion to allow the bills, properly approved, to be paid. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman f Bender Office sesand place same on file. Roll call vote. AYE- Unanimous. Reports of � Under reports of Standing Carmi.ttees, there were several comments about thLa e Canton. Alderman Bender stated that there parking Beach now. Alderman Gibbons stated that by fall, there should be seven or eight lease lots opened up. Alderman Long thought it would be nice to have a parking area for campers at Lake Canton. Mayor Cook made a recommendation that the request for resignation be made of two employees of the Sewerage Disposal Alantt. After much discussion., both pro and con, Alderman Howard moves a sanction the Mayor's re camnendation to replace the two workers and ask for their resignation. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Sebree, Howard, Duncan, Whitehead, Skinner, Long, Jennings, and Bender. NAY: Aldermen Wright, Hurst, Abbott, Gibbons, Horton, and George. (8 AYES and 6 NAYS). Motion carried. After the second reading of the 1963-1964 Appropriation Ordinance, Alderman Howard moves and Alderman Horton seconds a motion to place the Ordinance on its passage. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman Jennings asked the City Clerk to read a petition signed by fifteen people living in the immediate neighborhood of the proposed City garage site, stating that they had no objections to the City of Canton purchasing the building at 617 East Pine Street for garage and storage. Alderman moved and Alderman Long seconded d motion to purchase property. Aldermen Howard, Skinner, Long, Jennings, Bender. NAY: Aldermen Sebree, Wright, Duncan, Hurst, Whitehead, Abbott, Gibbons, Horton, and Geor#e. (5 AYES and 9 NAYS). Motion lost. Alderman Wright moves and Alderman Hurst seconds a motion that Mayor Cook appoint a camnittee of three to investigate just what type of building is needed as a City garage. AYE: Aldermen Sebree, Howard, Wright., cd George. Hurst, Whitehead, Long, Abbott, Gibbons, Horton, Jennings, and NAY: Alderman Skinner. (13 AYES and 1 NAY) . The canmittee appointed: Aldermen Gibbons, Long, and Howard. Alderman Jennings reported that the excavating had been done on the White Court parking lot. On motion of Alderman Hurst which was seconded by Alderman Howard that the Traffic Camnittee be permitted to go ahead with the final plans for the Jones Park improvement, the voice vote was unanimous. A motion by Alderman Long, seconded by Alderman Horton, for the purchase of a Lgwnport awning for use in Jones Park. The first reading of the Local Improvement Ordinance for Van Dyke Drive and Lawrence Drive, known as Local Improvement No. 63-D was made. 1 . 193 July 2, 1963, Pg. 2 The City Clerk reported that no bids were received for the sewer cleaning project. Alderman Hurst moves and -Alderman Duncan seconds a motion for the City Clerk to open the bids for the -purchase of the garbage truck. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. Bids read: Bob & Gene's Chevrolet $4695,00 Truck Equipment Co. 5595.00, less trade in-of $1290.00,-- $4305.00 H.E.Miller Auto Body 5290.00, less trade in-of •800.00,-- 5490.00 H.E.Miller Auto Body 4840.00, less trade in-of 600.00 -- 4240.00 Lock's Auto Co. 1962.67, ' Alderman Bender moves and Alderman Long seconds a motion to have the Garbage Disposal Committee study -the bids and report at the next meeting. Roll call vote. AYE: unanimous. A letter of resignation of Eugene Waddell, Supt. of the Sewerage Disposal Plant �. read. Alderman Bender moves and Alderman George seconds the motion to accept Mr. Waddell's resignation. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous.
