HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-06-1961 Council Meeting Minutes 37 Canton City Council met June 6, 1951, 7:05 P. PSI., in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Cook called for Roll Call. Present: Aldermen Howard, Sebree, Staley, Wright, Herbener, Hurst, Long, Skinner, Gibbons, Abbott, ?Derry, Horton, George, and Bender. (Alderman Long arriving at 7:07 P. °_.) . Members of the Council gave the Pledge of Allegiance. Alderman Herbener introduced Mr. Reed, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, who thanked the members of the Council for their mart in providing the off-street parking. Mr. Sale, representing the Canton Amateur Radio Club, was introduced by Alderman Herbener. Mr. Sale asked permission to use a portion of the land now leased by the Youth Acres Organization (Youth Acres -.roue agreeable to this Proposition), for the purpose of building a club house so that these students may continue t .eir work. Alderman Staley moves and Alderman Wright seconds that the Mayor and Chair- man of the Water Committee enter into an agreement with the Hadio Club. Poll call vote. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved to be placed on file. Alderman Herbener read the bills for the Finance Coraaittee and moves that all bills pronerlyy approved be allowed for payment, seconded by Alderman Bender. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Howard, Sebree, Staley, Bright, Herbener, Hurst, Long, Skinner, Gibbons, Abbott, Berry, Morton, George, and Bender. MAY: None. Motion carried. Alderman Horton read the bills for the 'olice and Legal committee and moves that all bills properly approved be allowed for payment, seconded by Alderman Skinner. Roll call vote. Alderman Hurst moves that the Council instruct the City,- Attorne-r to proceed with necessary legal procedures to determine if the Star Deliver-r firm, located on 5th Ave. is operating in accord- ance with the Zoning Ordinance passed in 1956. This motion was seconded by Alderman Wright. Discussion. Alderman Herbener moves to table the above motion. After more discussion, Alderman Howard seconded the motion to table Aid. Hurst's motion. Alderman Hurst stated that he was willing to amend_ his motion and ask that Ilr. Se,-,ift -Hake a report at the next Council meeting. Alderman Staley stated that the Council should b^ willing to accept the Traffic Committee's renort if the previous motions were withdra7wn. Saie refused. Roll call vote on the motion to table Alderman Hurst's motion. AYE: Aldermen Howard, Sebree, Staley, Herbener, Long, Skinner, Gibbons, Abbott, Rerry, Horton, and 'Sender. Alderman Render expressed thanks to Eldon ;`Ayers, Orval Kuhn and their crews, for the work at the Canton Lake recentl,' . About eighty-one tons of sand was donated for this word. by the Duck Island Sand and Gravel Co. Alderman iloward stated that a campaign should be made for safety on Lake Canton. Alderman Sebree, in reply to Alderman George 's inquiry, stated that a street light would soon be placed on N. 10th Ave. Alderman Wright moves that Alderman Staley be appointed as Ilayor Pro Tem (when Mayor Cook is unable to assume his duties) . Alderman Long, seconded by Alderman Bender, recommended that this appointment be approved. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. Mayor Cook recommended the appointment of Charles Gardner as an Auxiliary Policeman. Alderman Herbener, seconded by Alderman Long, recommended that this appointment be an proved. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman Staley inquired about the street improvement on Park Plaza Court and was in- formed that it was late for plans for this work this year. Alderman Skinner moves and Alderman Abbott seconds that the City Clerk be authorized to advertise for bids for chips and oil for Cit.,,., Streets. Discussion. Roll call vote. Alderman Hurst inquired if owners of nronerties that are a nuisance or hazza.rd could be ordered to remove same. It was recommended that the Fire Chief investigate same. Alderman Staley renort d there were several such buildings in the City. Alderman Herbener recommended that the Garbage Disnosal Committee take some action N about ridding the Dump Grounds of rate. (and stated that some buildings around the C* City also need checking on) . Alderman Staley reported that a firm from Peoria would �L2 be interested in talking to the Council regarding their system of Garbage 'Disposal. Meeting for this rurnose to be held June 13. Alderman Wright reported tn.at a street light and pole on ;lain and Sycamore was -placed so that is caused traffic trouble. Same referred to tTie Street and Alley Committee.
