HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-19-1960 Council Meeting Minutes 45 July 19, 1960 Canton City Council met July 19, 1960 7:00 P. M. in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Woods called for Roll Call. Present: Aldermen Martin, Howard, Staley, Jones, Wm. Wright, Long, Shelby Wright, Gibbons, Berry, Bender, and George. Absent: Aldermen Chas. Wright and Herbener. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved to be placed on file. !ledge of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Alderman Long, Mayor Woods called for reports of Standing Committees. Mayor Woods called for reports of Special Committees. Mayor Woods called for Communications to the Council. A note of thanks for flowers from Mable Coons. (Flowers had been given for the .-� Open House held on July 12, 1960. Miss Coons a member of the Libary Board). A request by the Cootiette Club to hold a tag day on Aug. 13 to help that club with their Hospital Work. Alderman Bender, seconded by Alderman Howard, moves that the request be granted. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. A Bond with the American Surety Co. in the amount of $1000.00 for Oren W. Brown, Superintendent of Cemetery, was read. Alderman Long, seconded by Alderman Shelby Wright, moves that the Bond be accepted and placed on file. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. First reading of an Ordinance prohibiting trespassing in the area around the Lake Canton Spillway. Alderman Bender moves that the rules be suspended, seconded by Alderman Wm. Wright. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen George, Bender, Berry, Gibbons, 6helby Wright, Long, Wm. Wright, Jones, Staley, Howard, and Martin. NAY: None. Motion carried. Alderman Wm. Wright mov:.s that the Ordinance be placed on its passage, seconded by Alderman Bender. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Martin, Howard, Staley, Jones, Wm. Wright, Long, Shelby Wright, Gibbons, Berry, Bender, and George. NAY: None. Motion carried. This being Ordinance No. 17. Alderman Martin moves and Alderman Long seconds that the City Audit be accepted and placed on file. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman Long moves that, since each Alderman had received a copy of the Tax Levying Ordinance before the date of the Council meeting, the council dispense with the reading of same. Motion was seconded by Alderman Gibbons. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen George, Bender, Berry Gibbons, Shelby Wright, Long, Wm. Wright, Jones, Staley, Howard, and Martin. NAY- None. Motion carried. It was decided to let the matter lay over until the next meeting. First estimate of the work on the Canton Sewerage Project by the Caldwell Engineer- ing Co. as prepared by the Engineer for Crawford, Murphy and Tilley in the amount of $37,490.40 was read. Alderman Wm. Wright moves and Alderman George seconds that the bill be allowed. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Martin, Howard, Staley, Jones, Wm. Wright, Long, Shelby Wright, Gibbons, Berry, Bender, and George. NAY: None. Motion carried. Alderman Staley recommended that signs be placed on various streets indicating the location of the "City Limits ?. Alderman Martin suggested the removal of a sign on North Main Street but was informed that the State had jurisdiction over same. Alderman Jones reported complaints of street conditions. After some discussion Alderman George moves that the matter of repairs and oiling needs of approximately thi- ty blocks be seeferred to the Street and Alley Committee, Street Superintendent and City Engineer. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen George, Bender, Berry, Gibbons, Shelby Wright, Wm. Wright, Jones, and Howard. PASS: Alderman Long. NAY: Alderman Martin. (9 AYES, 1 PASS, and 1 NAY). Motiondeclared carried. Alderman Howard moves that the proper authorities be instructed to draw up a "Truck Route" and present same to the City Council for approval, seconded by Alderman Long. Oral vote. AYES and NAYS. Alderman Howard requested a Roil Call vote. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen Howard, Long. NAY: Aldermen Martin, Staley, Jones, Wm. Wright, Shelby Wright, Gibbons, Berry., -Bender., and George. (2 AYES and 9 NAYS). Motion defeated. Alderman Bender inquired about the water project on West Locust and was informed that the work would continue as soon as weather conditions were favorable. Alderman Berry moves to adjourn. Motion seconded by Alderman Jones. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous. Canton City Council adjourned at 7:45 P. M. City Clerk. v' August 2, 1960 Aug. 2, 1960, 7 :00 P. M., the time and date for the regular meeting of the Canton City Council. Mayor Woods called for Roll Call: Present: Aldermen Martin, Chas. Wright, Staley, Jones, Long, Shelby Wright, and Berry. Absent; Aldermen Howard, Herbener, Wm. Wright, Gibbons, Bender, and George. Alderman Martin moves that the Council adjourn until the next regular meeting date because of lack of a quorum.
