HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-06-1953 Council Meeting Minutes 5 Canton, Illinois October 6, 1953. A regular meeting of the City Council held this day convening at the hour of 7:00 P. M. with Mayor woods presiding. Roll call showed the following present: Alderman Sebree, Duncan, Moore, 'sundry, Miller, Smith, Linder, Skinner, T ink, Coleman, Cook, Staley and Puskarich. Absent: Alderman Klobuchar. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and stood approved as read. The following officers monthly reports were submitted: Chief of kolice; Bldg. Comm; street Supt; City Engineer; Water & Sewer Dept; Water Treatment plant; Sewage treatment plant; Plumbing Inspector, Sec. of Fire Department. It was moved by Alderman Skinner, seconded by Alderman Moore, all cizin reports be accepted and placed on file. It was moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Sebree, to amend the original motion, and not pay claims of Robert Harding and Richard Smith in the amounts of $75.00 each for attorney fees, until it can be further checked by the City Attorney. Roll call vote: AYE: Alderman Sebree, Moore, Landry, Smith, Linder, Skinner, 'link, Coleman, Staley and Puskarich. NAY: Alderman Duncan, Miller and Cook. The chair declared the motion carried. Roll call on the original motion: AYE: Alderman Sebree, Duncan, Moorej Landry, Miller, Smith, Linder, Skinner, Tink, Coleman Cook, Staley and Puskarich. Petition of the Joe Hooker Post No. 9 auxiliary to the GAR, that the City officials vacate and restore the Memorial Hall as a monument to the Soldiers of all wars, was on motion of Alderman Skinner, seconded by Alderman Puskarich, referred to the Legal Department by a vivavoce vote. Request of Dr. Vitt for 2-meter space on the square for a Mobile X-Ray unit, was on motion of Alderman Moore, seconded by Alderman Coleman granted. Request of Navy Club of the United States, for permission to show a mobile exhibit on the square, was on motion of Alderman Moore, seconded by Alderman Puskarich granted by a viva voce vote. Resolution requesting the Legislature to return "home rule" to the Cities of this State, and also to remedy the ciritical financial plight by permitting them to receive a portion of the Retailers ' Occupation Tax, was on motion of Alderman Skinner, seconded by Alderman Puskarich, adopted by unanimous roll call vote. " Ordinance Taxing Persons in the Business of Selling Cigarettes at Retail" was read for the second time. It was moved by Alderman Moore, seconded by Alderman Staley, to table the ordinance. Roll call vote: AYE: Alderman Sebree, Duncan, Moore, Lundry, Miller, Smith, Linder, Skinner, Tink, Coleman, Cook, Staley and Puskarich. NAY: None. The chair declared the motion carried. Ordinance "Wheel Tax Ordinance" was read for the second time. It was moved by Alderman Staley, seconded by Alderman Duncan, to place the ordinance on its passage. Roll call vote: AYE: Alderman Duncan, Moore, Lundry, Miller, Smith, .Linder, Skinner, Coleman, Staley and Puskarich. NAY: Alderman Sebree, Tink and Cook.
