ORDINANCE N0. 1415
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 8-10-2 OF THE CANTON MUNICIPAL CODE
RELATING TO THE MANNER OF READING WATER METERS FOR THE CITY OF
CANTON
WHEREAS, Section 8-10-2 of the Canton City Code provides
that is a building served by the City waterworks system has both
an approved inside and outside meter, the readings of the outside
meter shall be used for billing purposes; and,
WHEREAS, the inside meter is considered to be the more
accurate measurement; and,
WHEREAS, the Legal and Ordinance Committee has considered
the problem of differences in readings between the inside and
outside meters and has recommended modifying the ordinance to
select the inside meter as the official reading.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CANTON, Fulton County, Illinois as follows:
1. That the Canton City Council hereby finds the foregoing
recitals to be fact.
2. That Section 8-10-2 of the Canton Municipal Code is
amended to read as follows:
"8-10-2: MANNER OF SETTING METERS, STOP BOXES: All meters
now in use and connected and all meters hereafter to be
placed in connection with the City waterworks system shall
be act under the direction of the Building Official in some
convenient place in the cellar, or (if there is no cellar)
on the first floor of the building served, to be approved by
the Building Official. If the building served has both an
approved inside and outside meter, the readings of the
inside meter shall be used for billing purposes. In tapping
City water mains, a stop box or a cut-off shall in every
case be set on the service pipe, the top of which shall be
flush with the surface of the ground, and at the outer edge
of the street sidewalk in front of the premises being
served. Any person removing, destroying or covering over

any such stop box shall be subject to a penalty of not less
than twenty five dollars ($25.00) nor more than five hundred
dollars ($500.00) for each offense plus the City's cost of
restoration of the same."
3. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect
immediately upon its passage by the City Council of the City of
Canton, Fulton County, Illinois and approval by the Mayor thereof.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton
County, Illinois at a regular meeting this lst day of
February , 1994.
