ORDINANCE NQ. --� �
AN ORDTIVANCE REGUL ATIN� THE OPERATICIN OF BICYCLES WITHIN THE
CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS
BE IT ORDAINED BY TFiE CITY OOUNCIL �F THE CITY OF CANTON,
ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1. The word "bicycle" herein used shall mean
every device propelled by human power upon which any person may
ride, having two tandem wheels or so constructed as to have two
wheels behind a leading wheel.
SECTION 2. No person shall operate a bicycle on and
along any street in the City of Canton, Illinois :
(a) During the period from sunset to sunrise, or
at any other time when visibility is so limited as to require
the use of lights for safety, unless the same shall be equipped
on the front with a lamp which shall be emitting a white light
visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and
with a red reflector on the rear of a type approved by the
Secretary of the State of Illinois. A lamp emitting a red light
visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in
lieu of a red reflector.
(b) Unless the same is equipped with a brake which
will enable the operator to make the braked wheels skid on dry,
level, clean pavement .
(c) Unless the same is equipped with a bell or
other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance
of at least 100 feet, except that a bicycle shall not be equipped
with nor shall any person use any siren or whistle upon a bicycle.
SECTION 3. The parent of any child and the guardian of
any ward shall not authorize or knowingly permit any such child
or ward to violate any provision of this Ordinance.
SECTION 4. Violation of this O.rdinance or any part
thereof by any child or ward shall be prima facie evidence
that any parent of such child or guardian of such ward authorized
or knowingly permitted such violation by such child or ward.
SECTION 5. The provisions of this Ordinance are separable
and the invalidity of any part hereof shall not render invalid
any other part hereof.
SECTION 6. Any person who violates any provis.ion of
this Ordinance shal.l be fined not less than Five Dollars (�5.00)
nor more than �t,ro Hundred Dollars (�200.00) for each offense, and
a separate offense shall be deemed committed on each day durin g
which a violation occurs.
SECTION 7. This Ordinance shall be and become effective
following its passage by the City Council, approval by the Mayor
and publication according to law.
