They have been doing research on Canton history. A tombstone was presented in 1925 in memory of Isaac Swan. Isaac Swan is the founder of Canton and was killed in 1835 in a tornado. When the tombstone was given by the city it was placed in a part of the original section of the cemetery. It is in the far northwest corner of the cemetery and there are no roads leading to it. Mr. Swan is not buried in Greenwood Cemetery, and it is unclear where he is buried. It also overlooks the city sewage department, which wasn't there at the time of its placement. They would like the tombstone moved to the downtown area. Ray and Emily will contact Nancy Rabel to look up cemetery/city protocol concerning this request. Abel's will be contacted to get a quote to have the tombstone moved. "At the Spoon River Reads Cemetery Walk Barb was asked why the flags were not lit at night. Roy found 'flag policy' which states, `The United States flag may be flown at night. The flag does not have to be illuminated. G.R. Watson verified this on October 27, 2001 with the Canton Commander of the VFW. The Commander verified this with U.S. Representative Lane Evans. *It was discussed and decided that the price for the available crypts in the mausoleum will be $1,000.00 each. "There was discussion about having street signs made for the roads and lanes throughout the cemetery, which would make it easier to find plots. No decision was made. *Susan reported that two $50,000.00 Certificates' of Deposit with the Farmington Bank are coming due. She will renew them with the Farmington Bank at .65°/a interest for 24 months. Due to the holidays the next board meeting will be held December 12, 2013 at the cemetery office at 9:00 AM.
