ORDINANCE NO. 3019
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 6 SECTION 6-1-1: DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED OF
THE CANTON MUNICIPAL CODE
WHEREAS, Title 6-Police Regulations, Section 6-1-1: Department Established
currently provides as follows:
"There is hereby established an executive deparfment of the city government
which shall be known as the police deparfment, and which shall consist of one
police chief, one deputy chief, four (4J police lieutenants, four (4J police
sergeants, and fifteen (15J patrolmen, up to seven (7J telecommunicators, one
noncommissioned code enforcement officer, one executive secretary, and one
department secretary. When any officer of the police deparfment, who
occupies the position of lieutenant, sergeant, or patrolman, becomes inactive
such that it appears that a full time appointment will be necessary so as to fill an
ongoing vacancy and/or an anticipated requirement, then the police and fire
commission may, at its discretion, appoint an officer in a full time capacity to fill
such vacancy. The deputy chief, telecommunicators, executive secretary,
department secretary and the noncommissioned code enforcement officer
based upon the recommendation of the police chief shall be appointed by the
mayor with approval of the city council. Part time noncommissioned personnel
may be used on an "as needed" basis to work as radio operators, but only to the
extent that full time commissioned officers are inadeqvate to meet such needs.

WHEREAS, the City desires to amend said Section 6-1-1 to provide for a Director
of Public Safety and provide for up to a cerfain number of officers to be
employed within the Deparfment, and;
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined it to be in the best interests of the
City to provide for the position of Public Safety Director and modify their
Ordinance to show employment of up to a cerfain number of officers employed
by the Deparfment under Title 6, Section 6-1-1 of the Canton Municipal Code.
NOW THEREOFRE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CANTON,
FULTON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, as follows:
l. That the foregoing recitals of fact are found to be true.
2. That Title 6-Police Regulations, Section 6-1-1: Deparfment Established shall
be amended as follows:
"There is hereby established an executive department of the city government

the director of public safety who shall act as the police chief, one deputy chief,
five (5J police lieutenants, three (3J police sergeants, and fifteen (15J patrolmen,
up to seven (7J telecommunicators, one noncommissioned code enforcement
officer, one executive secretary, and one department secretary. When any
officer of the police department, who occupies the position of lieutenant,
sergeant, or patrolman, becomes inactive such that it appears that a fvll time
appointment will be necessary so as to fill an ongoing vacancy and/or an
anticipated reqvirement, then the police and fire commission may, at its
discretion, appoint an officer in a fuil time capacity to fill such vacancy. The
deputy chief, telecommunicators, executive secretary, department secretary
and the noncommissioned code enforcement officer based upon the
recommendation of the director of public safety shall be appointed by the
mayor with approval of the city council. Parf time noncommissioned personnel

3. That upon passage of this Amendment, the City Clerk shall be instructed
to forward to the codifiers of our Municipal Code the said Ordinance
Amendment for inserfion in its proper piace in each copy of this Code
within thirty (30J days from the date of its final passage.
PASSED, by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton Covnty, Illinois,
at a regular meeting this 2~d day of July 2013 upon a roll call vote as
follows:
