Emiquon Complex - Wetlands of International Importance
Whereas, the Emiquon Complex is a thriving and productive wetland mosaic
of 14,000 acres located along the Illinois River near Lewistown, and
Whereas, the complex consists of The Nature Conservancy's Emiquon Preserve,
the Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge, and the Chautauqua National Wildlife
Refuge, and
Whereas, practices have been used to restore this formerly drained and
degraded area back to a high-quality natural area in a relatively short amount
of time, and
Whereas, through collective and collaborative restoration and management
initiatives, the complex supports thousands of migrating waterfowl and other
native species, helps to clean water entering the Illinois River, provides
recreational opportunities for thousands of visitors, and serves as a model for
resource managers around the wor~d, and
Whereas, the Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty with 162
member nations across the world, committed to the conservation and wise use
of wetlands and their resources.
NOW, Therefore, the Ramsar Convention has designated the Emiquon
Complex as "Wetlands of International Importance", and
The Emiquon Complex will be honored in a joint ceremony with the Dixon
Waterfowl Refuge of Hennepin on August 8, 2012, and therefore, I, Kevin R.
Meade, encourage all the citizens of Canton and surrounding areas to visit,
support, and appreciate the beauty of the natural fish and waterfowl habitats
of Emiquon, right here in our beautiful Fulton County, Illinois.
