HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-27-2001 Mechanical Mechanical Committee City Council Chambers in Historic Depot March 27, 2001 - 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Jim May, Chet Phillips, Others Present: Mayor Donald Edwards, Jim Elson, David Nidiffer, Kevin Meade, Bob IVlolleck, Larry Sarff, Clif O'Brien, Gary Orwig, Steve White, Chief Elam, Chief Stanko, Jim Snider, John Froehling, Public Safety & Traffic Committee Jo Anne Shores, Chairman Chief Stanko distributed the written monthly Fire & ESDA report for review. He reported the total estimated fire loss last month was $134,000, which resulted from two house fires. One fire was determined to have been caused by a child playing with a lighter. Damage was set at $44,000. The other fire was caused by heat from a fireplace chimney igniting the roof, causing approximately $90,000 in damage. Of the 112 calls the fire department received, 85 of them, or 76% were for rescue types of responses for medical situations, accidents with injuries and the like. There were nine false alarms due to malfunction of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and alarm systems, Police Chief Elam submitted his monthly police report for review by the committee. 92 persons were arrested for violations other than routine traffic arrests in February. He also noted Canton police investigated 41 traffic accidents. Three of which involved injuries to six people Jim Snider informed the committee that International Truck and Engine (formally International Harvester) today had four contractors on the 33 acre former IH site to prepare bids for removal of 16-18 storage tanks located on the site. This action is in response to an enforcement letter sent by the USEPA to remove the tanks. Snider said that USEPA people have indicated the removal should begin by May 1, 2001 at the expense of International Truck and Engine Company. This removal represents the beginning of phase three of the clean up which will also include any ground contamination that is found on the site. Testing for any ground contamination should concluded in the next few months. No further business was discussed and the committee adjourned. Streets & Garbage Committee Chet Phillips, Chairman Clif O'Brien reported he has received several calls for leaf pick-up and will continue the service for the next few weeks. Lake, Buildings & Grounds Committee Jim Hartford, Chairman Dick and Judy Holloway informed the committee of their intent to construct an addition to their home located on a City of Canton lake lot lease. They submitted to the committee a copy of their building permit from Fulton County. Motion made by Alderman Phillips to approve the request, second by Alderman May -motion carried. No further business was discussed and the committee adjourned. Public Works, Water & Sewer Committee Jim May, Chairman Jim Elson informed the committee that all the easements needed for the water main project have been obtained. Clif O'Brien has finished all clearing of trees needed to comply with IEPA requirements for the protection of wildlife preservation. Steve White informed the committee of the engineers' recommendation to put off the repairs of the 4`~' Avenue water tower until the fall so as to protect water demand over the summer months. The lake is currently full. Approval by the IEPA for the loan money should be forthcoming soon. No further business was discussed and the committee adjourned at 6:45pm Recorded by Jim Snider
