Public Works Director reported that on April 18, 2005, while televising and cleaning sewers along Spruce Street as part of the department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant, Hoerr Construction encountered bricks in the manhole at the intersection of Spruce and Johnson Court and the sanitary sewer. Upon further inspection of the sanitary manhole, we observed a major cave in on the east side of the brick manhole. Eight contractors were contacted including several local contractors. The local contractors were either too busy or the project was beyond the scope of their work. Three contractors from outside the area drove to Canton, looked at the project and gave estimates to remove and replace the manhole. Hillyer Inc. presented the lowest estimate of $6,600 to furnish excavating equipment and labor. The City would be responsible for providing the following items: (1) manhole, (2) sand backfill, (3) various piping and fittings, (4) trucking of materials to and from job, and (5) restoration of the roadway. The total estimated cost of this project including retaining Hillyer Inc. is $12,970.00. Motion and second by Aldermen Molleck/Reed, to send the request to council for their consideration.
