AN ORDINANCE DECREASING THE NUMBER OF ALDERMEN IN THE CITY OF CANTON,
ILLINOIS TO EIGHT AND REDISTRICTING THE CITY OF CANTON, ILLINOIS INTO
FOUR WARDS.
WHEREAS, Chapter 24, Section 3-4-7 of the Illinois Revised Statutes
(1977) provides, in part, that in cities exceeding 3,000 inhabitants,
but not exceeding 15,000 inhabitants, there shall be 8 aldermen; and
WHEREAS, Chapter 24, Section 3-4-9 of the Illinois Revised Statutes
(1977) provides, in part, that every city shall have one-half as many
wards as the total number of aldermen to which the city is entitled and
the City Council, from time to time, shall divide the City into that number
of wards; and
WHEREAS, Chapter 24, Section 3-4-10 of the Illinois Revised Statutes
(1977) provides, in part, that whenever any census shows that any city
contains more or less wards than it is entitled to, the City Council of
the city, by ordinance, shall redistrict the city into as many wards only
as the City is entitled; and
WHEREAS, the Ward Boundary Committee of the City of Canton, Illinois
has determined that the City of Canton contains more aldermen and wards
than it is entitled to; and
WHEREAS, the Ward Boundary Committee has determined that it is
necessary, desirable and to the best interests of the City of Canton to
decrease the number of aldermen to eight (8) and redistrict the City
into four (4) wards; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois has made
a similar determination.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CANTON, ILLINOIS, AS FOLLOWS:
1. The City of Canton shall have eight (8) aldermen. Two (2)
aldermen shall be elected to represent each ward in the City and their
terms shall be staggered by the process specified in the Illinois Municipal
Code. All aldermen elected shall hold office for a term of four (4) years,
and until their successors are elected and have qualified.

2. The City of Canton shall be divided into four (4) wards, the
boundaries of which are hereinafter described.
3. The boundaries of Ward Number One (Northeast Ward?, or the First
Ward, shall be as follows: Beginning where the northerly corporation line
intersects the centerline of North Fourth Avenue in the City of Canton,
Fulton County, Illinois, running thence South along the centerline of
North Fourth Avenue to the centerline of East Chestnut Street, thence East
along the centerline of East Chestnut Street to the easterly corporation
line, thence northerly along the easterly corporation line to the northerly
corporation line, thence westerly along the northerly corporation line to
the place of beginning. Ward Number One is shown on the Plat which is
attached hereto and made a part hereof as Exhibit A.
4. The boundaries of Ward Number Two (Northwest Ward), or the Second
Ward, shall be as follows: Beginning where the northerly corporation line
intersects the centerline of North Fourth Avenue in the City of Canton,
Fulton County, Illinois, running thence South along the centerline of
North Fourth Avenue to the centerline of East Ash Street, thence West along
the centerline of East and West Ash Street to the centerline of North Avenue
B, thence North along the centerline of North Avenue B to the centerline of
Cass Place, thence West along the centerline of Cass Place to the westerly
corporation line, thence northerly along the westerly corporation line to
the northerly corporation line, thence easterly along the northerly corporation
line to the place of beginning. Ward Number Two is shown on the Plat which
is attached hereto and made a part hereof as Exhibit A.
5. The boundaries of Ward Number Three (Southwest Ward), or the Third
Ward, shall be as follows: Beginning where the southerly corporation line
intersects the centerline of South Main Street in the City of Canton, Fulton
County, Illinois, running thence North along the centerline of South and North
Main Street to the centerline of East and West Ash Street, thence West along
the centerline of West Ash. Street to the centerline of North. Avenue B,
thence North along the centerline of North Avenue B to the centerline of
Cass Place, thence West along the centerline of Cass Place to the westerly

corporation line, thence southerly along the westerly corporation line to
the southerly corporation line, thence easterly along the southerly cor-
poration line to the place of beginning. Ward Number Three is shown on
the Plat which is attached hereto and made a part hereof as Exhibit A.
6. The boundaries of Ward Number Four (Southeast Ward), or the Fourth
Ward, shall be as follows: Beginning where the southerly corporation line
intersects the centerline of South Main Street in the City of Canton,
Fulton County, Illinois, running thence North along the centerline of
South and North Main Street to the centerline of East and West Ash Street,
thence East along the centerline of East Ash Street to the centerline of
North Fourth Avenue, thence South along the centerline of North Fourth
Avenue to the centerline of East Chestnut Street, thence East along the
centerline of East Chestnut Street to the easterly corporation line, thence
southerly along the easterly corporation line to the southerly corporation
line, thence westerly along the southerly corporation line to the place of
beginning. Ward Number Four is shown on the Plat which is attached hereto
and made a part hereof as Exhibit A.
7. The next city election of aldermen shall be held in accordance
with this new redistricting. After this election, the aldermen whose
terms of office are not expiring shall be considered aldermen for the new
wards respectively in which. their residences are situated. If there are
two (2) or more aldermen with terms of office not expiring who reside in
the same ward under the new redistricting, the alderman who holds over
for that ward shall be determined by lot in the presence of the City Council,
in whatever manner the Council shall direct,and all other such. aldermen shall
fill their unexpired terms as aldermen-at-large. The aldermen-at-large, if
any, shall have the same. powers and duties as all other aldermen but upon
the expiration of their terms, the offices of aldermen-at-large shall be
abolished.
8. That the City Clerk of the City of Canton, Illinois is hereby
authorized and directed to file with the County Clerk of Fulton County,
Illinois, a certified copy of this Ordinance.

9. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect upon its
passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois and approval
by the Mayor thereof.
