AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 9, CHAPTER 11, SECTIONS 1 AND 4 OF THE
CANTON MUNICIPAL CODE CONCERNING PENALTIES FOR PARKING VIOLATIONS.

WHEREAS, the Legal and Ordinance Committee of the City of Canton,
Illinois has determined that it is necessary, desirable and to the best
interests of the City of Canton to modify and amend Title 9, Chapter 11,
Sections 1 and 4 of the Canton Municipal Code; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois has made
a similar determination.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CANTON, ILLINOIS, AS FOLLOWS:
1. That Title 9, Chapter 11, Section 1 of the Canton Municipal
Code be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9-11-1: PENALTY:
Any person, firm or corporation violating any pro-
vision of this Title shall be fined not less than
five dollars ($5.00) or more than two hundred dollars
($200.00) for each offense; except that any person,
firm or corporation who violates Title 9, Chapter 5,
Section 2 of the Canton Municipal Code concerning
parking after a snowfall of three inches (3") or
more shall be subject to a fine of not less than
twenty five dollars ($25.00), nor more than two
hundred dollars ($200.00) for each offense."
2. That Title 9, Chapter 11, Section 4 of the Canton Municipal
Code be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9-11-4: PARKING VIOLATION:
Except as provided in Title 9, Chapter 11, Section 1
of the Canton Municipal Code, any person accused of
a violation of an ordinance prohibiting parking a
vehicle in a designated area or restricting the
length of time a vehicle may be parked there, may
settle and compromise the claim against him or her
for such violation by paying to the City the sum of
five dollars ($5.00) for each offense within twenty
four (24) hours from the time such violation was
committed. Such payment shall be made at the
Police Station and a receipt shall be issued for
all money so received, and such money shall be
promptly turned over to the City Treasurer to be

placed in the General Fund. If such payment is made,
the members of the Police Department and Traffic
Officers are hereby authorized to refrain from
instituting a prosecution for said violation.
Provided that this Section shall not apply to
persons parking a vehicle so as to obstruct the
entrance or exit of any place where Police or
Fire Department apparatus or other emergency
equipment is kept or housed, or so as to block
an emergency entrance in a hospital. Nor shall
this Section apply to any person charged with
parking a vehicle so as to entirely obstruct traf-
fic in any street or alley, or parking in such a
way as to reduce traffic on an arterial street to
one-way traffic only; nor to any person who refuses
to move a vehicle illegally parked at the request
of any member of the Police Department."
3. That the remainder of Title 9, Chapter 11, Violations and

Penalties, of the Canton Municipal Code remain in full force and effect.
4. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect 10 days
after its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Illinois,
approval by the Mayor thereof, and publication according to law.
