COVID SAMPLING PROGRAM
The University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Public Health reached out to the city in
regards to the early detection of covid in a wastewater stream. This type of study started in
New York and overseas before it came to our area. Samples are used to monitor covid action-
because it is found in wastewater. Canton was 1 of 8 communities picked in Illinois to start. A
sampling program is generated 2 days per week. Samples are sent to the University of Illinois.
This program has expanded and currently over 20 communities in the area are participating.
Data was provided for the first time just last week from the findings. (After participating for
approximately 10 months) The data is being shared with the department of public health. The
data is used to project outbreaks. The data did show the spike that the city recently saw with
the number of covid cases.
