HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-06-07 City Council Minutes A regular meeting of the Canton City Council was held on November 6, th 2007 in Council Chambers, at the Historic Depot, 50 North 4 Avenue, Canton Illinois. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE OPENED THE MEETING FOLLOWED BY THE INVOCATION GIVEN BY CITY CLERK NANCY WHITES. Mayor Heinze asked for roll call at 6:30 p.m. Present – Aldermen Eric Schenck, Joe Berardi, Larry Sarff, Craig West, David Nidiffer, Kevin Meade, Jason Standberg, Sonya Lewis. Others attending: Mayor Rodney W. Heinze, City Clerk Nancy Whites, City Treasurer Kathy Luker, City Attorney Chrissie Peterson, Police Chief Jeffrey Fritz, Fire Chief Bonnie Cremer, Water Treatment Supt. Greg Pollitt, Street Supt. George Spahn, Video Services by Joe Ginger. In the audience was Negotiator for the Public Works union Dave Smith, Fire Secretary Kayma Duncan, News Media of John Froehling from the Daily Ledger, Denise Bankes from Democrat, the Girls Traveling Softball Association members, and Harold Rose. MINUTES OF COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 16, 2007. Motion and second by Aldermen West/Lewis, the minutes of October 16, 2007 council meeting be accepted and placed on file. The motion carried by voice vote, and was unanimous. MINUTES OF MECHANICAL COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 23, 2007. Motion and second by Aldermen Lewis/Jason, the minutes of Mechanical Committee meeting held on October 23, 2007 be accepted and placed on file. The motion carried by voice vote, and was unanimous. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Public Safety & Traffic. Council Action Bids for fire department parking lot. Motion and second by Aldermen Schenck/Sarff, approval of the low bid of Greg Foose Construction in the amount of $36, 213.28 as recommended by Keith Plavec of Maurer Stutz 1 Inc. Roll call. AYES – Aldermen Lewis, Strandberg, Meade, Nidiffer, West, Sarff, Berardi, Schenck. NAYS – None. 8 AYES, 0 NAYS, 0 ABSENT. Motion carried. Streets & Garbage. Council Action None. Lake, Building & Grounds. Council Action None. Public Works, Water & Sewer Council Action Avenue C Bid results Laverdiere Construction $548,790.45. Motion and second by Aldermen Strandberg/Sarff, approve the low bid of Laverdiere Construction in the amount of $548,790.45, as recommended by Keith Plavec of Maurer Stutz Inc. Alderman Strandberg commented that this is from the Bonding Funds. The grant received for this will pay around $278,000.00. Roll call. AYES – Aldermen Schenck, Berardi, Sarff, West, Nidiffer, Meade, Strandberg, Lewis. NAYS – None. 8 AYES, 0 NAYS, 0 ABSENT. Motion carried. IMLRMA Insurance payment of $212,151.61.Motion and second by Aldermen Strandberg/Sarff, accept the Early Payment by November 16, 2007 of 51% of Annual Payment of $212,151,61. Roll call. AYES – Aldermen Lewis, Strandberg, Meade, Nidiffer, West, Sarff, Berardi, Schenck. NAYS – None. 8 AYES, 0 NAYS, 0 ABSENT. Motion carried. COMMUNICATIONS FROM MAYOR HEINZE – Good News – Girls Softball League. Mayor Heinze congratulated the Girls Traveling Softball Association. This association began 2 years ago 2 when participation in girls softball was low. This group formed and coordinated with the Canton Park District and the Canton School District to build the softball programs an improve the facilities. They have improved the girls’ fields, build dug-outs, added concessions, and are working to add permanent restrooms and lights. Canton now boasts several traveling teams and some of the nicest fields for girls in the area. Members are Steve Nuttall, Harold Rose, Bob Barnes, Lane Hampton, Shelley & Judy Buhs, Ken Brant, Lori & Bob Wages, Todd Harris and many others who have helped and held fund raisers. Council members gave the Girls a standing ovation for their accomplishments. Appointments. Motion and second by Aldermen Sarff/West, the appointment of Alderman Jason Strandberg to the Insurance Committee be confirmed. The motion carried by voice vote, and was unanimous.
