AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 6, CHAPTER 1, SECTION 1 OF THE CANTON MUNICIPAL
CODE RELATING TO THE NOMENCLATURE OF RANK STRUCTURE WITHIN THE CANTON
POLICE DEPARTMENT.
WHEREAS, the Legal and Ordinance Committee has determined that it
is desirable and in the best interest of the City of Canton that the rank
structure within the Canton Police Department be renamed and given a
different nomenclature; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Canton has made a similar
determination.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CANTON, Fulton County, Illinois as follows:
1. That Title 6, Chapter 1, Section 1 of the Canton Municipal Code
is hereby amended to read as follows:
"6-1-1: DEPARTMENT CREATED: MEMBERS: There is hereby established an
executive department of the City government, which shall be
known as the "Police Department", and which shall consist of one Chief
of Police, three (3) police lieutenants, three (3) police sergeants, ten
(10) patrollmen, four (4) radio operators, one part-time radio operator,
one non-commissioned traffic control officer, and one secretary-file clerk."
2. That, in all other respects, Title 6, Chapter 1 of the Canton Municipal
Code is hereby reaffirmed and ratified.
3. That nothing in this ordinance shall be interpreted as entitling officers
presently assigned to the Canton Police Department greater salaries by reason of
the renaming of the command positions within such department.
4. That, by adopting this ordinance, it is the specific intention of the
Canton City Council that officers presently appointed as corporals within such
department shall, after reappointment as required by law, be known and called as
sergeant; and, that officers presently appointed as sergeants within such depart-
ment shall, after reappointment as required by law, be known and called as
lieutenant.
5. That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect immediately
upon its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County,
Illinois, and approval by the Mayor thereof.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois
at a regular meeting this 15th day of June , 1982
upon a roll call vote as follows:
AYES: Aldermen Horr, Carl, Grant, Sarff, Savill, Hammond, Kovachevich.
NAYS: None.
ABSENT: Aldermen Clarke resigned on May 31st, 1982
