AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE TIME OF QUALIFICATIONS OF NEWLY FT,FY'iTF:I~ OR
APPOINTID MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, the Canton City Council has previously by Ordinance Number 878,
passed by the Canton City Council and approved by the Mayor thereof on or
about March 31, 1981, fixed the date of inauguration of newly elected or
appointed officials to the first regular or special meeting of the corporate
authorities in the month of May next following their election or appointment;
and,
WI~REAS, Section 3-2-6, Chapter 24, Illinois Revised Statutes (1983) re-
quires that all persons elected or appointed to office qualify within ten
days after the municipal clerk notifies such person of his or her election or
appointment; and,
WHEREAS, qualification for office requires the taking and subscribing of the
oath of office and the subscribing of any required bond within said ten day period;
and,
WHEREAS, the common practice of allowing newly elected or appointed officials
to take and subscribe their oath of office and subscribe any required bond at the
first meeting in May contemporaneously with their assumption of their duties may
exceed the ten day qualification period as aforesaid.
NOW, TfiEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINID BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CANTON,
Fulton County, Illinois, as follows:
1. That, as applicable, all persons elected or appointed to municipal offices

in the City of Canton shall, wihtin the time fixed by law, take their respective
oath of office, subscribe their oath of office and subscribe any required bond during
the month of April following the proclamation of the official results of the election
and within ten days after the Canton City Clerk notifies such persons of thier
election or appointement.
2. That the taking of the oath, the subscribing of the oath and the subscribing
of any required bond shall, whenever reasonably be expedient, be accomplished at the
regular Canton City Council meeting next following the date of the preceeding munici-
pal election and the proclamation of the results thereof.
3. That, in the event the taking of the oath, subscribing of the oath and the
subscribing of any required bond at the regular City Council meeting is not practical,
the City Clerk shall, during normal business hours, give the prescribed oath of
office and all newly elected or appointed municipal officers shall take and subscribe
the said oath on a date and time during normal business hours to be fixed by the
Mayor. The giving of the oath by the City Clerk and the taking and subscribing of
the oath by the newly elected or appointed municipal officials shall be open to the
public and to all media.
4. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect immediately
upon its passage by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County,
Illinois, and the approval of the Mayor thereof.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Canton, Fulton County, Illinois
at a regular meeting this 1 6th day of April, 1985, upon a roll call vote
as follows:
AYES: Alderman Horr, May, Carl, Workman, Sarff, Hammond,
Kovachevich.
NAYS: None .
ABSENT: Alderman Savi11.
