HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-1965 Council Meeting Minutes 362 Sept. 14, 1965 Canton City Council held a regular meeting on Sept. 143 1965 in the City Council Chamber. Mayor Woods called the meeting to order at 7:05 P. M. Present for Roll Call: Aldermen Howard, Rusnak, Duncan, Farr, Whitehead, Jacobs, Long, Kroell, Ellis, Spencer, George and Danner. Absent: Aldermen Skinner and Jennings. Pledge of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Alderman Danner. Alderman Long moves to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as presented, Alderman Krbel1 seconds this motion. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. Mayor Woods called ror reports of standing committees. Alderman Long stated that the Water and Sewer Committee had met with the City Attorney regarding easements for the proposed Division 6, Water and Sewer Improve- ments, and three persons were willing to give easements: Mrs. Alice Ward $500.00, Phillip Eck $$200.00 and Otto Wells $6QO.00 (the Wells easement to include the pur- chase of .57 acre of land -- this in order that the 6011 sewer may be constructed to reach the sewer plant. Alderman Long moves that these easements be allowed for payment, Alderman Jacobs seconds this motion. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. Consideration in installing gas for heat and also the processing of sewerage at the Sewerage Disposal Plant was mentioned by Alderman Long -- he stated that it would cost approximately-$500.00 to run the gas main to the plant. This matter to be discussed at a later date. Alderman Danner, reporting for the -Claims Committee recommended that the Melvin Foster claim for $5.40 be allowed. Mayor Woods stated that a motion should not be made until the City Attorney had been consulted about this claim. Recommendation withdrawn. Father Schramm reported that it was allright to restrict parking on either side of North Third Avenue from Locust to Ash Street as long as it was not made a one- way street. Mayor Woods called for reports of special committees. Alderman Ellis reported that three of the members of the traffic committee have seen the report recommending painting traffic lanes at Main and Locust Streets. Alderman Ellis moves that recommendations to the Council to. cooperate with the State and the Chief of Police to work out traffic problems at Main and Locust Streets. Alderman Farr seconds this motion. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. Closing of a portion of West Chestnut Street for the time that an auction was to be held by the Associati-on of Commerce has been abdndoned was reported by Alder- ran Jacobs. Alderman Howard reported that purchases made by committee members should be by asking for bids from merchants and these bids kept on file -in City Clerk's office. Announcement of the Canton Friendship Festival Luncheon to be held in the Canton Country Club on Sept. 18, 1965 at 1:00 P. M. Mayor Woods called for communications to the Council. Letter of resignation of Alderman Robert Jennings who had moved from his ward. Alderman George moves to accept same and place on file. Alderman Howard seconds motion stating he had a very pleasant association in dealing with Robert Jennings. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. Kayor Woods called for unfinished business. Mayor foods called for new business. First reading of an Ordinance creating eight police patrolmen rather than seven. Alderman Farr moves to suspend the rules, Alderman Whitehead seconds same. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman Farr moves and Alderman Whitehead seconds motion to place this Ordinance on its passage. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. This being Ordinance No. 152. 363 Sent. 14, 1965, Cont. (2) First reading of Ordinance pertaining to salaries to be paid School Patrol Guards. No action. First reading of a Stop and Yield Right-of-Way Sign Ordinance. Alderman Ellis stated that the Ordinance should contain a section regarding school crossings and recommended that the Ordinance lay over. Presentation of proposed plat for P,Iobil Home Gardens located on East I;eech and Shamrock Streets . -- outside City limits. Mr. A. D. Pa=inter explained the pro- posed Projects asking that the City Council accept the plat so that it could be recorded with the Fulton County Recorder. Discussion regarding county zoning. Alderman Howard moves and Alderman George seconds motion that the proposed plat be taken before the Planning and Zoning Commission for their recommendation to be read to the Council at the next meeting. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. Per.. Leroy Riley was. given permission to speak to the Council -- he asked for help from the Council, City Attorney and City engineer to build sidewalk on North Main Street in the vicinity of the High School.; same to be paid by the property -, owners. Alderman Farr moves and Alderman Duncan seconds motion that the City Council give full support and all assistance necessary to aid this project. Roll t., call vote. AIT,,: Unanimous.
