Canton City Council held a regular meeting-on Nov. Nov. 17, 1964
Council Chamber. In the absence' of the Mayor, City lClerk6Crawford called
the meeting to order at 7:05 P. M. and asked for motion to designate a Mayor
pro tem for the-meeting. Alderman Wright moves and Alderman Bender seconds
a motion that Alderman Howard be named as Mayor pre tern for the evening.
Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous.
Roll call for attendance: Present: Aldermen Sebree, Howard, Wright, Duncan,
Hurst, Whitehead, Skinner, Abbott, Horton, Jennings, and Bender. Alderman
Long arriving at 7:14 P. M. Absent: Alderman George.
Pledge of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Rev. Archer.
Alderman Bender moves and Alderman Horton seconds a motion to accept the
minutes of the previous meeting and place on file. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous.

two projects that the committee have recommended - cleaning a place for
camping at Lake Canton and an area along Big Creek -- this work to be done

Mc. Chester Miller reported on the work being done, on the drying beds at the
sewer plant -- bed NQ five now completed at a cost of $1100.00 -_ these
beds are being constructed under approval by the State Board of Health.
Mayor pro tem Howard called for communications to the Council.
Letter from the Canton Planning Commission recommending rezoning a lot south
and east of 1175 North Main Street from an R-1 to R-4 zoning in order that
the Morning Star Lodge No. 745 A.F. & A.M. may build a Masonic Temple on the
lot. A Petition with twenty-nine property owners (over 50%) requesting that
the lot be rezoned read. Alderman Jennings moves and Alderman Bender seconds
a motion that the letter of recommendation be accepted. Voice vote. AYE:
Unanimous. Alderman Long moves and Alderman Jennings seconds a motion that
an ordinance be drafted for the rezoning of the property described in the
petition. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous. (Petition No. 94).
Mayor pro tern Howard called for unfinished business.
Alderman Bender reported that it was almost impossible for several families to
get their cars in or out of the driveway near Ave. B and the Railroad Street
and asked if the City could repair this passageway because it 'was a great fire
hazard. Discussion as to whether this passageway was a street, alley or privat e
property. Street and Alley Committee to investigate.
Second reading of Ordinance pertaining to Supper Clubs. Alderman Wright re-
quested that Rev. Archer and Rev. Hancock be allowed to speak for those who
were opposed to the ordinance. Rev. Archer stated that the petitions presented
at the previous meeting were signed on a voluntary basis and no one signed
because of any embarrassment. He pointed out a number of reasons why the

ordinance should not be passed, including the fact that alcoholism is the
