Canton City Council held a regular meeting on Se^t. , 1961 in the City
Council Chamber. Mayor Cook called the meeting to order at 7:01 P. I1.
Present for Roll Call: Aldermen Sebree, Howard, Wright, Duncan, Hurst,
'sdhitehead., Skinner, Long, Abbott, Horton, Jennings, bender, and George.
Absent: None.
Pledge of Allegiance was followed by Prayer by Alderman Howard.
Alderman Bender moves and Alderman Jennings seconds a motion to move the
opening of bids for the ITater and Sewer Improvements to the next item on the
agenda. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous.
Alderman Bender moves and Alderman Jennings seconds a motion that the Clerk
be instructed to open bids. Roll call vote: AYE: Unanimous.
Lids for Section Three, four and Five on the ^Tater and Sewer Imnroveri: nts
opened. Alderman Bender moves and Alderrzan' JenninF,s seconds a motion that _Hr.

these bids to his office for study and report to the noun Council meet . ;. Roll
call vote. AL's: Unanimous.
:alderman Long moves and Alderman Morton seconds a motion that the minutes of the
previous meeting be accepted as presented and placed on file. Voice vote. AYE'-
Unal-iimous.
11ayor Cook called for reports of standin- committees.
Alderman Hurst moves that the Garbage Disposal Committee be granted perrlission
to advertise for a tractor for the sanitary land fill -- bids on standard
transmission and also on p%ie3` shift. Discussion. Alderman Howard stated
this would be a waste of money to advertise `for bids; Alderman Jennings asked
that an informal meeting of the Council be held for farther eX,,,)lanation of .
the three proposals that Alderman Hurst had reported. Al.derraan. Horton seconds
the motion. Roll call vote. AYE: Aldermen George, Jennings, Horton, Abbott,
I.,ong, Skinner, UTIZitehead, Hurst, Duncan, i-Tr fight, and Sebree. 14AY: Aldermen
Tender and Howard. (11 AYES and 2 NAYS) . :lotion carried.

Hayor Cool: called for communications to the Council.

Resignation of Roy V. Scalf from the Planning Commission because of illness.
Alderman ' rider moves and Alderman George seconds the motion to accept this
resignation, with regret, and give a standing ovation for the fine work lir.
Scalf has performed on this committee. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous.
Letter from the T. P. & 00T. R.R. thanking the city for the valuable assistance
given by the Canton Police Department at the.time of the derailment of a freight
train on Auzust 28.
Tlayor Cook called for new blusiness.
Alderman Bender requested that the Street superintendent .Hake an estimation of
the cost of repair on the Canton Lake road.
Second estimate for work on the Water and Sewer mnrovements by the Johnstone
Construction Co. read. Alderman lender moves and Alderman Lon; seconds a motion
that this clamp be allowed. Voice vote. AYE: Unanimous.
Alderman Jennings moves that the Street Sun_ erintendent be in charge of street
openinVs and to see that same are replaced to his satisfaction. Alderman IIorton
seconds this motion. After discussion, Alderman Horton withdrew his second and
Alderman Jennings withdrew his motion.

Alderman Wright moves that an extension of one hundred feet, more or less, be
allowed on Hemlock Drive (owners 'to put in curb, cu-tter and winter fill for a
street) for two new homes bei_n erected. Alderman Jennings seconds this motion.
Voice vote. AY,: Unanimous.
Alderman Wright asked that the City Attorney write to the r_ew owner of the old
Pfister Building and confirm his intentions of remodeling or razing this building.
First reading of an Ordinance pertainin- to stop sign. Chief of Police Lindzey
recommended that this stop sign (First Ave. and Sycamore Street) be changed for
the school year only. Alderman Bender moves and Alderman Jennings seconds a
motion to suspend the rules. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. Alderman Bender
moves and Alderman Jennings seconds a motion to place this ordinance on its

Mayor Cook appointed Alderman Dimcan as Chairman of the Civil Defense Committee,
CA replacing Alderman Paul. Gibbons; Hr. Paul Gibbons on the Planning Commission, re-
placing Mr. Roy V. Scalf; Alderman Sebree on the Finance Committee, ..lderran
Abbott on the 'I'ra-1-Tic Committee, and AAldex^:ari I;ender on the Claims Committee
each replacing Alderman Paul Gibbons. Alderman song moves and Alderman Jennings
seconds a motion that these appointments _-e confirrled. Poll call vote. AYE:
Unanimous.
