Canton City Council met on Aug. 18, 1959 at 7:35 P. M. in the City Council Chamber.
Roll call. Present: Mayor Woods, Aldermen Martin, Chas. Wright, Jones, Herbener,
Long, Shelby Wright, Gibbons, Hill, Berry, Bender, and George. Absent: Aldermen
Howard, Staley and Wm. Wright.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved to be placed on file.
Second reading of a Petition from Vernon R. Denney requesting permission to use
an R-1 Zoning area for commercial purposes. After discussion, it was suggested
that Mr. Denney appear before the Council at the next meeting and explain his
plans.
Mayor Woods called for reports of Standing Committees:
Mr. Waldo Sebree, General Chairman of the Canton Friendship Festival was introduced,
and granted permission to address the Coundil. He requested permission to use a
portion of North First Avenue north of Brich Street extending to a point south of
Sycamore Street for the use of the Merchants Tent, stating that it would not be
necessary to drive stakes in the pavement. Alderman Chas. Wright moved that, pro-
viding no stakes be driven in the pavement, permission be granted for the use of
the tent, seconded by Alderman Herbener. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous.
Mayor Woods stated that it has been customary for the City Officials and their
wives to entertain the visiting Mayors and wives at a luncheon following the
parade of the Friendship Festival. Alderman Chas. Wright stated that it would
be a nice gesture to show appreciation to the visitors by having a luncheon again
this year. Mayor Woods appointed a committee to make arrangements: Aldermen
Martin, Herbener, Gibbons, and George.
Mayor Woods called for reports of Special Committees:
Mayor Woods called for Correspondence to the Council:
Bonds with the American Surety Co. in the amount of $1000.00 each for Richard L.
McCoy, Auxiliary Policeman and Veda Belle Benac, File Clerk were read. Alderman
Hill moved that these bonds be accepted and placed on file, seconded by Alderman
Bender. Oral vote. AYE: Unanimous.
A Resolution for a Primary Election for City Judge and Clerk of the City Court
on Oct. 27, 1959 and a General Election to be held on Dec. 15, 1959 was read.
Alderman Bender moved for the adoption of the Resolution, seconded by Alderman
Shelby Wright. Roll call vote. AYE: Unanimous. This being Resolution #218.
First reading of an Ordinance pertaining to Methods of reading Water Meters,
Upkeep of all Water Meters, Installation and Inspection of same. Alderman Martin
recommended that same lay-over until next meeting.
Alderman Bender inquired about the completion of Tenth and Eleventh Avenue and
was informed that same would be completed before Sept. 15.
Alderman Martin inquired if Mr. McMunn had any information regarding the Injunction
against Fifth Avenue. Attorney McMunn reported there were no new developments.
Alderman Herbener inquired about the Injunction against the "Bargain Barn" and was
told that same had been filed and that both parties had been served but no trial
date had been set.
Alderman Herbener moved to adjourn, seconded by Alderman Bender. Oral vote. AYE:
Unanimous. Canton City Council adjourned at 8:15 P. M.
