HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-22-1958 Council Meeting Minutes i SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING, APRIL 22, 1958 Mayor Woods called Special Council meeting to order at 7:15 P. M. on April 22, 1958. Roll call. Present: Mayor Woods, Alderman Sebree, Martin, Lundry, Miller, Jones, Wm. Wright, Turner, Shelby Wright, Roy Hill, Lester Hill, and Bender. Absent; Alderman Swick. I City Clerk read the letter stating the purpose of the meeting. "April 18, 1958 To: Nellie Crawford, City Clerk of the City of Canton, Illinois. " tou will please send a Notice to the Mayor and the Aldermen that Special Meeting of the City Council will be held on the 22nd day of April, 1958, at 7 o'clock in the Council Chambers at the City Building at Canton, Illinois, for the object and purpose of considering the purchase of a street sweeper. Signed, Finis Turner, Gus A. Miller, Roy L. Hill, and L. B. Lundry, Aldermen of the City of Canton, Illinois." Alderman Turner reported that the old street sweeper was in bad condition, needing a thorough overhauling that would cost approximately $2000.00 to put it in good working shape and that he favored the purchase of a new sweeper -- preferably the Elgin Sweeper. He stated that Superintendent of Streets, Robert Jennings, City Engineer Howard Gibbons and the Street and Alley Committee had seen a demonstration of the Elgin sweeper and were agreeable to that machine. Alderman Turner moved that the City of Canton purchase the Elgin Sweeper. Alderman Lundry seconded the motion. Alderman Martin asked for a review of the prices on all bids. Alderman Sebree inquired if all members of the Committee were favorable with this purchase and Alderman Miller reported that the reason he had asked for more time at the last Council 1Ieeting was for further study but was now convinced that the Elgin is a very good sweeper. Mayor Woods then called for roll call vote. AYE: Alderman Bender, Lester Hill, Roy Hill, Shelby Wright, Turner, Wm. Wright, Jones, Miller, Lundry, Martin, and Sebree. NAY: None. Motion to purchase sweeper carried. Alderman Turner moved that the Mayor and City Clerk enter into a contract with the Elgin Sweeper co., Elgin, Illinois, seconded by Alderman Lester Hill. Roll call vote. AYE: Alderman Sebree, Martin, Lundry, Miller, Jones, Wm. Wright, Turner, Shelby- Wright, Roy Hill, Lester Hill, and mender. NAY: None. Motion carried. Mayor Woods stated that, although the purpose of the meeting was for the purchase of a street sweeper, he would like to bring attention to the Aldermen for some thought and suggestions regarding the inconvenience from road dust to the Lundry Flying Service. Alderman Lundry made a motion for adjournment, seconded by Alderman Martina Special meeting of the Canton City Council adjourned at 7:45 P. M. 3 ; City Clerk.
