A regular session of the Canton City Council was held on June 1st, 1982
in Council Chambers.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE OPENED THE MEETING FOLLOWED BY THE INVOCATION GIVEN
BY ALDERMAN VIRGIL HORR.
Mayor Edwards asked for roll call at 6:30 P.M. Present: Aldermen Hammond,
SAvill , Sarff, Grant, Carl , Horr. Absent: Alderman Kovachevich. Alderman
Clarke resigned effective May 31st,
MINUTES OF MAY 18TH MEETING. Motion by Alderman Carl , second by Alderman
Horr, the minutes of May 18th meeting be accepted and placed on file. Voice
vote, motion carried.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Public Safety & Traffic.
Council Action
None.
Informational : A referral for a stop sign at 13th and Elm was given to the
Legal & Ordinance Committee.
Street & Garbage.
Council Action.
Motion by Alderman Savill , second by Alderman Sarff, the designated Avenue A
from Locust St. to Elm St, and 1st Avenue, the North side of Chestnut St thru
the South side of Pine as a segment of the Public Benefit Project. Discussion.
The city engineer will have a list of streets by next Wednesday June 9th. Roll
call . AYES: Aldermen Horr, Carl , Grant, Sarff, Savill , Horr. NAYS: None.
Motion carried. 6 ayes 0 nays 1 absent 1 resigned.
Lake, Building & Grounds.
Council Action
None.
Informational : Alderman Grant wants council 's imput to spend $475.00 for each,
including installation for four door closers for the city garage. Discussion.
JIm Boyd Street Supt. , wanted to buy at least two of them now. Lengthy discus -
sion followed. The City Engineer Cliff Sagaser will check into an industrial
door company for wax that can be used on these doors, and to have more informa-
tion at the next council meeting. Tabled until the next council meeting.
Public Works, Water & Sewer.
Council Action
None.
Community Development - Authorizing the mayor to sign contract for demolition
of real property. Two properties are ready for demolition and Bob Reed Director
wants permission to advertise for bid. Motion by Alderman Sarff, second by
Alderman Savill that this be allowed. Roll call . AYES: Aldermen Hammond, Sav,
ill , Sarff, Grant, Carl . Horr. NAYS: None. Motion carried. 6 ayes 0 nays
1 absent 1 resigned.
COMMUNCATIONS FROM CITY ENGINEER. The scheduled Hud work is to be done in two
contracts. The overlay of asphalt on Walnut Street should be done after the
tie in of the three streets that are going into it. Were concerned about the
acquisition of the right-of-way for 11th avenue holding us up some, reported
the city engineer. Two dates have been set for tentative council approval £dr
advertising bids and awards. Right now were scheduling 6th street which is
two blocks, 9th avenue between Grant and Oak one block, and the extension on
Oak for 8 blocks which all of this is for the first letting. Advertising for
bids on June 14th. Will be sending out letters the next day to contractors
with a bid letting date prior to July 6th.
Second project will include eleventh avenue, The .overlay__of Wal.nut_ Street, and ,
what ever funds we have for South 7th Avenue. , We have designs for'14t Avenue and
5th Avenue oniSam Scott but do not see it feasible for now. These bids will
be brought to council for their approval on July 12th. Awarded to the contractor
